Get ready to open your wallets while enjoying one of the best concerts of the year right from your living room. BET will air the 33rd annual “UNCF: An Evening of Stars” on Sunday, Sept. 25th at 10 p.m. EST.
Performers will include Patti Labelle, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Ledisi, Anthony Hamilton, Miguel, Estelle, Marsha Ambrosius and Musiq Soulchild. Taped at the Pasadena Civic Center, the show also features appearances by HBCU alumni David Banner, Terrence J. of BET’s “106 & Park,” Sheryl Underwood and actress Skye P. Marshall.
This year’s theme is “Educating the Future,” something the United Negro College Fund has done for the past 67 years. They’ve raised over $3.3 billion to help over 400,000 students, becoming the largest organization to fund black students’ education aside from the U.S. government.
The UNCF was co-founded in 1944 by then-Tuskegee Institute President Frederick D. Patterson, (along with activist Mary McLeod Bethune and others), who challenged his counterparts at other schools to band together to find funding for their respective schools.
With the support of late entertainer Lou Rawls, who started the show which at first carried his name, UNCF’s “An Evening of Stars” has assisted in the fundraising effort since 1979 and has been on the air since.
