First lady Michelle Obama got a less than enthusiastic reception at the Homestead-Miami Speedway Sunday when she and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, served as grand marshals for NASCAR’s Sprint Cup finale on Sunday.

According to Mediaite, when the first lady was introduced, “loud booing could be heard above the cheers.” The booing was not audible in the television broadcast, but was picked up by ESPN microphones.

The first lady and Mrs. Biden were at the event in support of Joining Forces, the initiative the women lead in support of military families. In fact, NBC Miami reported that a group of military families, including an Iraq war veteran, Sgt. Andrew Barry, and a group of children of military families were with Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden when they were booed.

The reception was warmer earlier in the day when Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden received a standing ovation at the pre-race drivers’ meeting earlier in the day, according to the Associated Press.

At the earlier event, Mrs. Obama praised NASCAR as having been “amazing in terms of its support, not just today but every day for military families,” and she said events like Sunday’s “remind military families that they do have a country that cares and appreciates what they do, and it means so much to them.”
