Cleveland NAACP President George Forbes has joined a group working to end marriage discimination in Ohio.
“The time is now to grant two loving people the Freedom to Marry. Not since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 has there been a more important step to achieving equality for all Americans,” Forbes said, in a prepared statement by the group Freedom to Marry.
But he also spoke for the freedom of churches and synagogues not to perform, support or recognized nontraditional marriages.
Forbes worked with black ministers in 2008-09 to stop an effort to repeal Cleveland’s Domestic Partner Registry.
The group is trying to repeal a 2004 amendment to the Ohio constitution that says the state only legally accepts a marriage between a man and a woman. The group’s proposal seeks to allow two consenting adults to marry, regardless of gender.
The group recently delivered a summary of its proposal and 2,380 signatures to the office of Attorney General Mike DeWine who had ruled the group did not clearly describe the measure.
