It’s tax day and the deadline to get your taxes filed is midnight.

Several years ago people would be coming and going at post offices all day. Now the Internal Revenue Service says 100 million people file electronically over the Internet, about 80 percent of filers.

There will be some post offices with extended hours if you’re sending your tax returns through the mail.

Cleveland’s main post office downtown on Orange Avenue will stay open until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Akron’s main post office on Wolf Leges Parkway will stay open until 7 p.m. For everyone else, it’s regular business hours.

Tax preparers have been busy the last few days leading up to the deadline and they expected Tuesday to be no different.

“People either run in and get their returns really early or they wait until last minute and we have a lot of people who have waited,” said Carrie D’Amico of Liberty Tax Service.  “We are able to file extensions for people who have waited and don’t have the materials that they need in order to file. We contact the IRS to make wage statements and get an estimate of what they’re going to owe.”
