Breast cancer rates in the African American community are much higher than the national average, mainly because of issues with access to care and early detection.

Caring Individuals is a group at the heart of that issue with a mission to spread awareness and help save lives.

The event is “Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer” and takes place at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center, 17100 Harvard Avenue, on Saturday, May 19.

The run is at 10:15 a.m. and the walk at 10:30 a.m.

Registration begins at 8am. There is a $10 registration fee, which includes a free t-shirt and refreshments.
