Black History Month Resources For The Classroom And Home

Black History Month is upon us and several resources are bridging the gap between Black History and American History.

Whether you are a parent or an educator there are a variety of websites and services offering lesson plans, study guides and interactive timelines reflecting back into the African-American experience.

Here are six tools you can use to incorporate Black History Month into your classroom or home for the next 28 days and beyond:

“Beyond Black History Month”– This University of North Carolina webpage offers strategies to integrate Black history into everyday classroom teaching.
Biography’s Black History Timeline– Trace the African American experience from 1619 until today through the Biography network’s interactive timeline. The site even includes games, study guides, quizzes and discussion starters.

Scholastic “Celebrates African-American” Heritage–Scholastic has provided multimedia resources and lesson plans that thoroughly explore slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and Black art and culture.
The New York Times Network Explores Black History-The acclaimed newspapers give students an opportunity to view archived front pages and news headlines on major events and milestones within African American history. The website also provides lesson plans, crossword puzzles and other great learning activities.
Lesson Plans from the National Education Association– The NEA gives provides teachers of all grade levels with a comprehensive collection of Black History lesson plans to add to the daily curriculum.
