America let out a collective gasp when highly favored American Idol contestant, Curtis Finch Jr., was eliminated. Although his dreams of winning the singing competition didn’t come true, his spirits were lifted when he met gospel icon, Pastor Shirley Caesar.

The multiple Grammy, Stellar and Dove Award-winning artist, recently visited the set of Good Day LA in support of her new project, “Good God,” due out March 26.

“I committed my life totally to the Lord when I was 12 years old. I’ve been singing since I was 3 and I know nothing else—no other music—but gospel,” said the 74-year-old in her sit-down interview with KTTV’s Steve Edwards and Maria Sansone.

Caesar, who got her start with the legendary gospel group, The Caravans, has a career that spans more than six decades.

“I believe what comes from the heart, reaches the heart,” said the Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee of her appeal. “When I was with The Caravans, I learned how to relate to the audience.”

That ability to relate and connect reaches across generations, as evidenced by 24-year-old Finch’s giddiness about meeting the “Queen of Gospel.”
