The actress reveals the secret to their marital success.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been married for 15 years — and it seems for almost as long they have been plagued by rumors that an “open marriage” policy is what makes things work.

When asked about the rumors, Pinkett Smith is coy: “I’ve always told Will, ‘You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be OK,'” the If These Walls Could Talk star toldHuffPost Live as she explained her views on what keeps their relationship going strong. “Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.”

“I don’t think it’s easy to be married to anyone,” admitted the 41-year-old actress. “I think that you have to go into a relationship knowing — especially when you’re dedicating yourself to someone for the rest of your life — this is a life partnership.”

They’ve certainly stuck together through thick and thin: in August 2011, allegations that she had an affair with a post-J.Lo Marc Anthony ran rampant, but Pinkett Smith denied the rumors.

“He’s my best friend,” continued Pinkett Smith of her husband, who is father to their two children: Jaden, 14, and Willow, 12. “He’s (Will) been by my side through some of the most difficult parts of my life. And so that’s something you can never take away.”
