Though gospel legend and TV show host Dr. Bobby Jones won’t officially turn 75 years old until Wednesday, national and local gospel artists will turn out in force for an early birthday celebration at 4:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion church in Antioch.

Jones began his gospel-themed Bobby Jones Gospel TV show in 1980 on BET Networks. Thirty-three years later, the show is still a mainstay on Sunday mornings, and Jones has become a beloved figure among gospel singers.

“We’ve gotten a lot of support from Nashville and the artists in Nashville,” said Shauntreece Franklin, event spokeswoman. “He opened the door for a lot of gospel personalities.”

Portions of the event will be edited and televised on BET Networks later this year.

The new season of the Bobby Jones Gospel show begins airing on BET Networks in October.
