School leaders and community members met downtown Wednesday to discuss the state of Cleveland Schools.
CEO of the district Eric Gordon was the keynote speaker. During his speech, he addressed the progress of the school system. He believes it’s heading in the right direction, but points out that there is still plenty work to be done.
“If I had to say what the state of the schools is today: a lot of momentum, a lot of outputs, but we need to see outcomes,” he said.
He believes that can be achieved through the Cleveland Plan. The comprehensive initiative was put together to help with academic reform. Taxpayers helped fund it through the passage of a levy last year.
Some of the changes the plan calls for have already been implemented, including the restoration of art, music and gym classes. Other changes are in the works though, like adding more honors and advanced placement courses.
Teachers and students seemed pretty responsive to the speech and hope the school system is heading in the right direction.
“We’ve got to make sure those resources hit where it’s needed and that’s in the classroom where grassroots level with the teachers who touch kids lives every day,” said President of the Cleveland Teacher’s Union David Quolke.
