1. NIGERIAN GIRLS KIDNAPPED

Life in the north: More than a week ago, 230 girls were abducted from a school in northern Nigeria, and about 190 are still missing. As tragic as it is, these sorts of occurrences aren’t unusual. The Islamist militant group Boko Haram has regularly bombed churches and mosques; kidnapped women and children; and assassinated politicians and religious leaders. Related violence has killed 1,500 people in the first three months of this year alone.

2. SOUTH KOREAN FERRY

More bodies found: It’s a grim scene as South Korean divers recover body after body from the hull of a passenger ferry that sank last week. The death toll keeps ticking upward. The number of dead reached 108 Tuesday afternoon; the number of people still missing stood at 194. It’s still considered a search and rescue effort, but no one’s been found alive since shortly after the ferry went down Wednesday.

3. BOSTON MARATHON

A rare win: For the first time since 1983, an American won the men’s division at the Boston Marathon yesterday. Meb Keflezighi crossed the finish line with an official time of 2:08:37. Kenyan Rita Jeptoo placed first in the women’s division for the second year in a row, setting an unofficial course record with a time of 2:18:57. Security was extremely tight after last year’s deadly bombing. There were no major incidents this time around.
