Since the world learned of Robin Williams taking his own life, a lot of attention has been placed on reaching out to help others.

Robin Williams battled depression for years and that topic along with suicide has been top-of-mind over the past 24 hours.

NewsChannel5 talked to the Director of Crisis Services Rick Oliver. He gave us some advice on what to look for and what to expect.

“If they’re not interested in getting help that is when we suggest calling a crisis hotline and talking over the situation with someone who can advise them on what next steps they can take. There’s a lot of overlap between the symptoms of depression and people who are thinking of hurting themselves and there is a lot of people who are suffering from depression and the vast majority of people will never attempt suicide,” said Rick Oliver, Director of Crisis Services for FrontLine.

Rick explained the five warning signs of depression as:

  1. not sleeping well
  2. having difficulty eating
  3. social isolation
  4. hopelessness
  5. helplessness

His suicide helpline is 800-273-TALK.
