City Council will give the people of Cleveland a chance to decide if they want to keep or get rid of traffic cameras.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections ruled that a low-key citizen’s group collected enough signatures to put the issue before voters.

Council had to take the final step to put the issue to a vote.

Council members themselves are split on whether or not to keep or scrap the cameras. Council members Zack Reed and Joe Cimperman said they’d campaigned to get rid of the camera, claiming they are an unfair money-grab that hurts many struggling Cleveland residents.

Council President Kevin Kelley and Councilman Brian Cummins will campaign on behalf of keeping the cameras, claiming they reduce accidents and make city streets safer.
