The Cleveland Kennel has a new, state-of-the-art facility coming in 2016, but until then, nearly 10,000 dogs will come to the current facility.
New Chief Animal Control Officer Ed Jamison is working hard to provide the best care for stray dogs, but even more importantly, to get all the dogs adopted into new homes.
“My goal here in Cleveland is to get every adoptable dog into a home. There are so many,” said Jamison.
120 pets are waiting at the kennel right now. The dark, outdated facility was built in 1977. Originally, dogs were only held for three days before they were killed if unclaimed or not adopted.
However, today the kennel has a surprising adoption rate of 79.3 percent. The volunteer group, Friends of the Cleveland Kennel, work tirelessly to achieve that number and to keep it on the rise.
“I’m confident they’re going to keep rising. Things that are already happening and new things that are already coming through here,” Jamison said.
