United States Attorney General Eric Holder called Ohio’s new voting law a “major step backward” in his weekly video message posted to the U.S. Department of Justice’s website on Monday.

“The public should be demanding the state officials who seek to impose these restrictions to justify — clearly, factually, and empirically — why they are necessary,” said Attorney General Holder.

The Attorney General criticized the new restrictions on early voting. Ohio’s 35-day early voting window is cut by seven days under the new law.

“Early voting is about much more than making it more convenient for people to exercise their civic responsibilities,” Attorney General Holder said in his video message. “It’s about preserving access and openness for every eligible voter, not just those who can afford to miss work or who can afford to pay for childcare.”

A federal judge had placed a hold on the new law, saying it was unconstitutional. The ruling was upheld by a federal appeals court judge. However, a 5-4 decision by the Supreme Court allowed the law to go into effect right away.
