The University of Akron is helping out on Make a Difference Day.

This year, the university organized service projects in the community for more 750 students. Some of their past projects included community clean ups, repairing homes, painting, spending time with the elderly, landscaping and animal care.

It’s their 10th year of participation in this day of service. Nearly 6,000 University of Akron volunteers have dedicated more than 20,000 hours of service to the Akron community.

nterested volunteers to join in on the national event can also call at Cleveland-based Business Volunteers (BVU) at 216-736-7711.

The university was named one of ten national honorees by USA Weekend Magazine, Points of Light, and the Newman’s Own Foundation in 2013.

A $10,000 donation in the university’s name was given to the United Way of Summit County. University of Akron also received a $1,000 grant last week from ServeOhio (Ohio Commission on Service & Volunteerism) to assist with the overall costs of the program.
