1. ROCKET EXPLOSION

An unmanned NASA-contracted rocket burst into flames yesterday along the eastern Virginia coast, causing a huge fireball. The rocket and cargo spacecraft were set to launch at 6:22 p.m. with 5,000 pounds of supplies to the International Space Station. “There was failure on launch,” NASA said. “There was no indicated loss of life.”

2. FERGUSON BACKLASH

Police chief to resign: The police chief of the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, who faced criticism over his department’s handling of the Michael Brown shooting, is expected to step down.  Police Chief Thomas Jackson is resigning as part of an effort to reform the police department, according to government officials. But he has denied the reports and says “nobody in my chain of command has asked me to resign.”

3. KIM JONG UN

Reason for his MIA: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un,who recently disappeared from public view for about six weeks, had a cyst removed from his left ankle, a lawmaker says.  South Korean officials said a cyst was found on Kim’s left ankle earlier this year. That cyst may have caused muscle nerve damage and prompted him to have ankle surgery between September and October, lawmaker Lee Cheol-woo said.
