1. JERUSALEM VIOLENCE
Security intensified: Jerusalem ramped up security after two Palestinian cousins wielding a gun and knives attacked a synagogue during morning prayers, killing four worshipers and a policeman. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the violence as the result of a “blood libel” fanned by Palestinian leaders. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack.
2. COLD, SNOWSTORMS
… but wait, there’s more: Snowstorms and record low temperatures whacked much of the country this week – and there’s more coming Wednesday. Another blast of cold air will hammer the Midwest and Northeast on Wednesday while the Southeast could see record lows as temperatures drop into the teens and 20s.

Dogs’ best friend: Pen Farthing, who founded a nonprofit that reunites soldiers with stray dogs and cats they took in during combat, is this year’s CNN Hero of the Year.
