Cleveland Police took a hands-off approach after a group of protesters poured onto the Shoreway Tuesday just as the evening commute began to pick up.

The protest started at Public Square before the group moved towards the Shoreway in the area of East Ninth Street and FirstEnergy Stadium.

More than 250 protesters carrying signs and chanting blocked the Shoreway in both directions for about 30-45 minutes.

Cleveland Police were monitoring the Shoreway as the crowds gathered there.

When asked, Cleveland’s Police Chief Calvin Williams told WKYC that they “would let the protest play out…”

The protest was described as peaceful but disruptive.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff Frank Bova said “We’re allowing them their constitutional right to protest.” Bova said he was there to assist Police Chief Calvin Williams.
