The city of Cleveland is offering shoppers and diners free meter parking on downtown streets Friday.

“Waiving downtown parking meter fees on Black Friday gives us the opportunity to compete with free parking in suburban shopping malls,” said Councilman Zack Reed. “Shoppers looking to pick up gifts at our unique shops downtown or dine in our fine restaurants won’t have to worry about feeding coins into parking meters or getting cited with parking tickets.”

In 2008, Cleveland City Council adopted legislation introduced by Reed that waives fees at downtown parking meters on the days after Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“We want to offer a convenience for holiday shoppers,” said Reed. “Downtown is the place to be for the holidays. Public Square’s lights and decorations, Playhouse Square’s restaurants and theaters, Tower City’s shops and East Fourth Street’s new restaurants all add to the season’s festivities.”
