An RTA train derailed Tuesday night in Shaker Heights.

According to RTA spokesperson Mary McCahon, the blue line train was heading westbound when it derailed at about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Farnsleigh Road.

No passengers were aboard and the driver was not injured.

RTA said they will be running a replacement bus service for customers between Shaker Square and the end of the blue line until further notice. Once the investigation is complete, they will be able to move the car and the trains can start running again.

As of 4:50 a.m., we have not received any updates from RTA about the situation.

CLEVELAND – A family of five is recovering in the hospital after police said a drunken driver caused an RTA bus to crash into their car Sunday night.

Cleveland police said the accident happened when a drunken driver, who was being pursued by fourth district officers, ran a stop sign at East 130 Street and Parkhill Avenue. That vehicle was then struck by an oncoming RTA bus and sent crashing into a tree.

As a result of the impact, the RTA bus then hit another vehicle carrying a man, woman and three children. All five sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Some RTA passengers also sustained injuries. Those victims were treated at various hospitals.

The drunk driving suspect was also taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree. Police said he was being pursued after reports he tried to run over a female in the 2800 block of East 117 Street with a white Chevrolet Impala.

The suspect will be charged with OVI, felonious assault and other charges upon release from the hospital.

The Pursuit Investigation Team and the Accident Investigation unit are handling reports.

RTA will delay its rail start time Saturday morning as Innerbelt Bridge construction continues.

All east side rapid transit service (red, green and blue lines) will be replaced by shuttle buses from the beginning of service Saturday until approximately 9 a.m.

RTA is delaying rapid startup while Innerbelt-related work happens over the tracks.

Bus departure times will be similar to the schedule for regular rapid transit service, but travel will be slower, said RTA.

• The east side’s Red Line replacement buses will serve all stations between Tower City and the Stokes/Windermere Rapid Transit Station.
  • The HealthLine will also be an alternative for some riders.
• Blue and Green Line replacement buses will serve all stations between Tower City and Green Road, as well as between Tower City and Van Aken/Warrensville.
• All buses will pick up and drop off on Public Square, in front of the former Higbee’s Department Store, at the B-Line/E-Line Trolley stop.
• Waterfront and west side Red Line rapid service will run as usual

The new $10 million East 55th Street RTA Rapid Station will be dedicated Tuesday at noon.

According to a media release from the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, the East 55th Street station is currently open and serving commuters using the Red, Blue, and Green lines along with bus service.

The new station is located at the southeast corner of Interstate 490 and East 55th street just across from the old East 55th Station.

Some Greater Cleveland RTA buses are getting a fresh coat of paint.

“Sometimes you need to show a picture of things to say, hey we don’t want this to happen,” said William Nix President of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 268.

Nix and RTA General Manager and CEO Joe Calabrese painted large red Xs on several buses Monday.

“That red X signifies that bus may not be here tomorrow,” said RTA spokeswoman Mary McCahon.

The Greater Cleveland RTA is joining a national campaign, called “Don’t X Out Public Transit” to warn riders what they said could happen if Congress approves a 30 percent cut to transportation funding.

The Xs show if the cuts are approved, than that bus, and the service it provides, could be gone.

“That will mean layoffs, service cuts, job cuts. Things that we really don’t think are going to be in the best interest in the country going forward,” Calabrese said.

We want the constituents to talk to their representatives and say hey, I’m a rider I take RTA, I take the train, I take the trolleys and I want it to stay,” McCahon said.

Filming of the movie I Alex Cross continues here. A major downtown street will be closed next week.

From 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Sept. 10, Lakeside Avenue will be closed from West Third Street to East Sixth Street.

The accident happened near the E.120th Rapid Red Line station.

The man was at track level, which RTA officials say she should not  have been.

“The tracks are not easy to get to, we are investigating why he was where he was and how he got there,” said an RTA official

The accident happened during the time that trains stop running for the night, so there are no trains scheduled to run again until 4:30am.

No word if the first train will run on time.

Ice and sleet from Sunday’s winter storm have caused problems for commuters, and shut down all RTA rapid trains Monday morning.

Frozen overhead power lines forced the RTA to shut down the trains, and use buses as a replacement, according to an RTA spokeswoman.

Passengers are still able to go to their normal stop, and then get on a shuttle bus instead of the rapid train, RTA said.

Crews are working to clear the ice from overhead lines, and will then will restore power to lines. Once the ice is cleared, train service will resume.
