After building a 24-point lead in the first half, the Pittsburgh Steelers held off a New York Jets rally in the fourth quarter for a 24-19 victory in the AFC championship game Sunday night.

Earlier, the Green Bay Packers went on the road and defeated the Chicago Bears 21-14 to win the NFC championship.

The Steelers and the Packers will meet in Super Bowl XLV on Feb. 6 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

On another note, Steelers coach, Mike Tomlin, already the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl, is also the first coach to make two Super Bowls before turning 40. He joins Joe Gibbs as men who advanced to two Super Bowls in their first four seasons as head coaches – Gibbs did it with the Washington Redskins. Source

Former Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor was arrested early this morning and will be charged with third-degree rape involving a 15-year-old girl at a hotel in Montebello, N.Y., according to police.

The Journal News reported that the victim was a runaway from the Bronx who was brought to the Holiday Inn by a pimp, according to Ramapo police supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence. She was treated at a hospital.

“She was a runaway since March and there was a pimp involved,” St. Lawrence told the Journal News. “She got punched in the face. We’re not sure who did it.”

The police have scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. to discuss the case and have said Taylor will be arraigned on third-degree rape charges this afternoon because the victim is a minor.

Taylor, 51, lists his residences as Pembroke Pines, Fla., but also owns a home in northern New Jersey.

Taylor, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and is considered one of the best defensive players of all time, had a 13-year career for the Giants that was marred by problems with drug and alcohol. He was suspended several times by the N.F.L. and was arrested multiple times for drug possession. In the past few years, Taylor has re-emerged as a public personality, including on N.F.L. broadcasts, and has said his drug problems are in his past.

Last November, he was charged in Dade County, Fla. with leaving the scene of an accident. He was released on $500 bond and the case is still pending.

Officials from the Giants and the N.F.L. said they would have no immediate comment.

Brees completed 29 of his final 32 passes – one of the incompletions was a time-killing spike – to lead the Saints to their first NFL title in franchise history.

After squandering a couple of scoring opportunities in the first half, the Saints generated momentum at the start of the second half when Payton ordered an onside kick. The gamble was successful and the Saints cashed in with a touchdown to take their first lead of the game.

 The crew of space shuttle Atlantis plans to deliver the Pro Football Hall of Fame a coin that traveled into space for use in the official toss at Super Bowl XLIV.

The crew finished an 11-day space trip in November that included three spacewalks and installation of two platforms to the International Space Station.

Along with the coin, Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys jerseys and a football inscribed with the names of all Hall of Fame members were on the shuttle flight and will be presented to the Hall in Canton on Wednesday.
