McDonald’s took to Twitter with #McDStories in hopes of finding followers to share enjoyed experiences and the like this past week. Instead the golden arch tales did not have happy endings.

Looking forward to becoming a top trending topic McDonald’s even paid Twitter to promote their hashtag on the homepage.

The fast food giant ended up battling a social media nightmare after their promotional hashtag was hijacked by unhappy eaters unleashing a super-sized backlash.

Customers tweeted about their unpleasant encounters with the fast food, such as food poisoning, chipped teeth and even finding a fingernail in a burger.

Some customer tweets include :

- Emmy, “Eating a Quarter Pounder value meal makes me feel exactly the same as an hour of violent weeping. #McDStories
- Skip Sullivan, “One time I walked into McDonalds and I could smell Type 2 daibetes floating in the air and I threw up. #McDStories
- Megan Latham, “Once when I was little…I was playing in the McDonald’s playhouse and a rusty nail stabbed me in my foot. #McDStories.

“Within an hour, we saw that it wasn’t going as planned. It was negative enough that we set about a change of course,” social media director Rick Wion said in an interview with PaidContent .

Although McDonald’s has pulled the campaign, the hashtag is still out in the Twittersphere and many are now tweeting about the failed promotion itself.

First Lady Michelle Obama officially joined the Twittersphere today, a move meant to expand her influence and outreach for the 2012 presidential campaign.

The account — @MichelleObama — will be managed by President Obama’s campaign staff, according to a statement on her profile page.  Tweets directly from Mrs. Obama herself will be signed “-mo.”

The first lady, who remains highly popular in public opinion polls, is seen as a significant asset in the effort to re-elect her husband.  On Wednesday, she hosted her first two fundraisers of the year with supporters in Virginia.

“Let me tell you something — I am in.  I am so in,” she told an intimate gathering of donors in Charlottesville. “That vision that we know, that world we want to create, we know what it is, but we have to work for it, and we need you fighting, working, hustling every second of the day until election day.”

Within the first two hours of launching her Twitter account, Mrs. Obama acquired more than 25,000 new followers. President Obama (@BarackObama) has more than 11.8 million followers and is the third most-followed public figure on Twitter.

WARREN, Ohio – A post on Twitter from a high school basketball player may keep him off the court.

Arthur Cook used to go to Euclid High School, but he moved to Warren in Trumbull County last year.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association said Cook tweeted last summer that he would be taking his talents to another school district.

The association ruled cook ineligible for a year, saying he left Euclid High School for a better basketball experience.

Cook’s family said he left to live with his dad after his parents split. And his attorney said the association has no right to keep him off the court.

“The basketball experience is rewarding in very many ways but one of those ways is his opportunities to help fund his college education and move forward,” said Cook’s attorney Sarah Baker.

And he can play — for now. Wednesday, a Trumbull County judge ruled the Harding High School student is allowed to play until a hearing in two weeks to determine his eligibility.

Cook is a straight-A student.

Bishop T.D. Jakes, the senior pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, was challenged about his beliefs regarding the Holy Trinity during a brief, yet heated, Twitter debate last Friday.  The subject of the twitter was the Trinity.

The Trinity is a hotly debated topic amongst many.

This recent discussion appears to have started when Jakes tweeted to his followers Friday the following message: “God brings us together so that He can dwell in the midst of our unity, the church must lift up a standard of unity.”

Another Twitter user with the handle “Defend Orthodoxy” then tweeted: “@BishopJakes: ‘…the church must lift up a standard of unity.’ // One reason why Modalism is a destructive heresy… misleading people.”

The Texas minister also began fielding accusations from Ken Silva (@RealKenSilva), pastor of Connecticut River Baptist Church in Claremont, N.H. Silva also runs an apologetics website, Apprising Ministries, where he is critical of teachings by various influential members in the Christian community, such as Jakes, Rob Bell and Rick Warren, to name a few.

Silva, an ordained Southern Baptist Conference minister, also questioned Jakes by tweeting to The Potter’s House pastor Friday: “@BishopJakes Which God are you talking about? The Triune God of the Bible, or the ficticious god of modalism? Which one do you believe in?”

It is no surprise that Americans spend a lot of time online, but almost a quarter of time is spent using social networking sites, according to research firm Nielsen.

Nielsen said online games take up only 9.8 percent of our time, and email takes up 7.6 percent.

In terms of where people socialize online, Facebook dominates – 140 million Americans spent more than 53 billion total minutes on the site in the one month that was measured earlier this year.

Blogging platforms Blogger and WordPress were also popular, and micro-blogging site Twitter continues to be a top site.

Nielsen also shared some interesting demographic breakdowns:

• Facebook, like all social networking sites, is used by more women than men.
• Linkedin and Wikia, host of Wikipedia, are the only top 10 social networking sites that show more male users than female.
• More African Americans use twitter than any other top 10 social networking site.
• In terms of trends for the future, Tumblr nearly tripled its users in the past year and is now the eighth largest social networking site.
• Thirty-seven percent of social networkers now access these sites through their mobile phones.

Instead, the research concluded that an interest in entertainment news was a “significant predictor” of Twitter use and that African American users were “more likely” than other groups to have a greater interest in celebrity and gossip updates.

“African Americans are more likely to be on Twitter, and it looks like they’re more interested in celebrity and entertainment news than whites, which explains this difference,” said Eszter Hargittai, a co-author with Eden Litt of the study “The tweet smell of celebrity success”, which will appear in the August issue of the journal New Media & Society.

“One of the reasons that Twitter has been successful among African Americans is that it’s good for people who like entertainment content and African Americans skew high on consuming entertainment content,” said Omar Wasow, co-founder of the social network BlackPlanet.com. “Twitter is a place you can follow lots of celebrities. It’s a better experience if you’re interested in entertainment than say Facebook.”

Twitter, together with the White House, announced Thursday morning that President Obama will be hosting a town hall meeting on Twitter.

The town hall, the first of its kind and a major win for Twitter, will take place on Wednesday, July 6th at 2 PM ET. President Obama will be answering questions related to the economy and jobs via live webcast, according to a tweet from the White House.

This marks the latest in a series of town hall meetings held by the White House that use social media as a platform for a Q & A with the President. Most recently, Obama held town halls that were hosted by and broadcasted on Facebook and YouTube, with questions solicited from the sites’ users.

According to International Business Times, a Georgetown study on the use and effects of social media found that more minorities spend more time on social media sites. Compared to Caucasian users, Hispanic and African-American users of social media are significantly more likely to learn about and become involved in social issues.
