Having endured her mother’s death, her father’s absence and being shuttled between multiples foster homes, Tawana McNair, 17,  is one of 35 seniors at Lincoln Academy receiving her high school diploma and her associates degree in the same year.

McNair, who decided to pursue the double degree after her teachers’ prompting, is a member of the first class of students to graduate from Hostos Community College’s Early College High School.

It’s a lot of work – you have to go to school year-round – so it was a lot of balancing, and a lot of people couldn’t handle it,” McNair said. “It’s hard managing school when you have your family issues on the side… if you mess up once it’s over.”
