The Avon Lake fire department and the U.S. Coast Guard are currently on scene at Lake Erie in Avon Lake searching for a male who was last seen in the water at Miller Road Park.

Family members tell NewsChannel5 that a 17-year-old male and a 24-year-old male were swimming when the current pulled them under the water. The 24-year-old was able to be rescued but the 17-year-old disappeared from view.

Avon Lake Police officers on scene say that the current is extremely unpredictable and strong. Signs warning swimmers to swim at their own risk were placed in the park last year.

The 24-year-old was transported by EMS to an unknown hospital. Family members say that he has been released from the hospital and is home.

Coast Guard officials say the male went missing just after 7 p.m. Sunday in Lake Erie near Illuminating Co. in Avon Lake Sunday evening when he reportedly went under water and did not re-surface.

A Coast Guard helicopter from Detroit and a 25-foot rescue boat from Station Cleveland Harbor are on scene to assist in the search.
