The Cleveland Metropolitan School District, which laid off more than 700 teachers earlier this year, will recall about half of them to ensure a smooth start to the new school year.
CEO Eric Gordon said Wednesday that an estimated 365 teachers will be recalled beginning Thursday morning. However, for some of them, the recall could be only temporary.
The resolution approved by the school board allows the school district not only to rehire the laid off teachers to staff schools on August 24, but also to lay off teachers in September, if necessary, to adjust for both financial and enrollment needs.
As of Wednesday, enrollment in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District had dropped to 42,233.
