The Cuyahoga County Board of Health says a rainy, hot summer is to blame for the overabundance of mosquitoes in Northeast Ohio this season.

Residents throughout the area report being inundated with the pesky insects. “They get on your hands. They get on your arms,” Lakewood resident Terry McHugh said. “You’re slapping here. You’re slapping there.”

Rainfall has been about 15 inches above normal along with one of the hottest Julys on record. “So we’re going to be in for a rough mosquito season for the rest of the summer,”  the Board of Health’s Joe Lynch said.

While no human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in the area, the health department said West Nile Virus positive mosquitoes were identified during routine trapping in Euclid and East Cleveland.  In response, all residential streets in East Cleveland will be sprayed on Wednesday evening and the streets south of Interstate 90 in Euclid will be sprayed Thursday, starting approximately a half hour after sunset on both nights.

In the meantime, Lynch advises everyone to use insect repellent, get rid of standing water, and go indoors around sunset and sunrise when the mosquitoes are the heaviest.

“People need to take precautions until we have our first good frost,” he said. So well into September and maybe early October, we need people to take precautions.”
