Christian activists from the National Organization for Marriage rallied nearly 50 people Tuesday afternoon in a Sioux City church’s parking lot to join a “growing army” in support of traditional marriage and voice their beliefs to judges, legislators and neighbors that marriage is between one man and one woman.

“It’s important that we get together and realize that there are many of us in our churches and communities,” said Brian Brown, executive director of NOM, as he stood in front of a recreational vehicle painted with an American flag and smiling heterosexual couples parked outside the Morningside Assembly of God Church. “We can’t just talk. We must act.”

Brown said his organization, which is traveling the country during its Summer For Marriage Tour 2010, hopes to register 2 million activists by the November election. So far 750,000 people have signed up at rallies or online, according to Brown.
Brian Feller, 25, traveled with friends to Sioux City from Sibley, Iowa, to support marriage between one man and one woman after learning of the event on the Internet. Feller, who identified himself as a Christian, said he thinks marriage was instituted as a state contract for the welfare of children and the family.
“I would hope for an amendment to our constitution,” he said. “I’d ask people to ask the legislature to do that.”
Former Republican state representative Danny Carroll, who served in the Iowa legislature from 1994 to 2006, said those in government can only push their constituents so far, and that the Iowa Supreme Court stepped over a “moral line” April 29, 2009, when it upheld a District Court ruling that there was “no important governmental interest” in prohibiting gay marriages, opening the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
