It’s an annual Labor Day parade that celebrates community togetherness.

But the 40th Annual Eleventh Congressional District Community Caucus Labor Day Parade and Festival at Luke Easter Park was about community healing.

“I grew up in this area, it’s always been an important parade for the community,” said Victoria Mockabee, of Cleveland.

“It makes me happy to see all the people go out there and be proud to show themselves to the community,” said Sadie Wright, 9, of Cleveland.

The annual parade ended with a memorial service for Anthony Sowell’s 11 victims.

Eleven doves were released and 1,000 balloons launched into the air, all to honor the 11 women who were murdered on Cleveland’s Imperial Avenue.

“We are releasing their spirits to a higher place, but we are also releasing our hurt and our anger to a higher place,” said 11th District Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge.

The goal of the balloon release was to show community support for the eleven slain women and their families.
