First Lady Helps Build House For Homeless Veterans

First lady Michelle Obama rolled up her sleeves to help renovate a house for homeless veterans last night on ABC’s two-hour season premiere of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

The episode spotlighted Barbara Marshall, a U.S. Navy veteran, who opened up her home to serve homeless female veterans in N.C.

I hope lots of people will be inspired by her story to give back to their communities – especially to service members and their families,” said the first lady.

Mrs. Obama rolled up her sleeves and joined host Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover team to work on renovating Marshall’s home. She contributed by hanging plaques and giving her input on the importance of the family having a vegetable garden. The first lady also welcomed the Marshalls into their dream home by joining the crowd chanting, “Bus driver, move this bus!”

Showing support to military families is a cause the Mrs. Obama holds close to her heart.

Earlier this year the first lady launched the Joining Forces military family assistance initiative with Jill Biden. The initiative seeks to bring together all sectors of society to provide military families with the opportunities and support they have earned.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has featured several high profile celebrities during its nine seasons on the air, but have never featured the first lady of the United States.

“We’ve had some big names on the show, but it honestly doesn’t get any bigger than this,” said Ty Pennington.
