A man suspected of being the knife-wielding slasher who killed five people during more than a dozen attacks in Michigan, Ohio and Virginia has been taken into custody, authorities said today.

“Late yesterday afternoon … a strong investigative lead … identified an individual who has ties to both the Flint, Michigan and Leesburg, Virginia areas,” Leesburg police spokesman Chris Jones said in a statement, according to The Washington Post. “Investigators … worked this lead through the night. A person of interest was taken into custody.”

A multistate task force received hundreds of tips during the investigation and one of those tips led to a beer store in Beecher, north of Flint, where the suspect previously worked, according to media reports.

Once the suspect was identified, investigators were able to electronically track him to Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport. At the time of his arrest, the suspect was reportedly on a Delta flight preparing to fly to Israel.

The man is being held on unrelated charges, Jones said.
