Fifty years ago, a catch phrase was born and today, Dr. Seuss’s famous Green Eggs and Ham is still captivating children and adults alike.

The Seuss classic was published in August of 1960 and according to a report by ABC news was the result of a bet made between Dr. Seuss and his editor.

According to ABC, the wager was for Seuss to come up with an intelligent and entertaining children’s book using just 50 words.  Seuss won the bet, along with $50–one dollar for each word in the book.

Reports by Publishers Weekly say that Green Eggs and Ham is in the top ten of all-time best selling children’s books, even besting Harry Potter and Pat the Bunny.

Green Eggs and Ham has taken on many interpretations over the years and has even been used as an example in marketing theory and strategy for businesses.

Upon Seuss’s death in 1991, the Rev. Jesse Jackson recited the words to Green Eggs and Ham as a tribute on the weekly “Saturday Night Live” show.

Even the Food Network boasts 10 different recipes for “Green Eggs and Ham on their website .

Dr. Seuss (who’s real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel) was an American writer and cartoonist who got his start as an illustrator writing for a humor magazine.   Today, he is a household name, known for not only Green Eggs and Ham, but other classic children’s books such as The Cat in the Hat and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.
