When the polls open at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections will be ready. Poll workers went out to their locations Monday night to make sure everything was in place.

“We are in good shape right now, we’re ready no matter how many voters turn out tomorrow. We are administratively prepared to run the election,” said Elections Director Jane Platten.

Voters, though, will face for the first time county wide a bilingual ballot with all of the wording in both English and Spanish.

“It is definitely something to be aware of,” said Platten. “That ballot is chock full of language, two languages, actually. It takes between 5 and 10 minutes just to read through the ballot, and that’s without a whole lot of thought process on who to choose.”

“So it’s going to take a little while to get acclimated to all the language on that ballot,” she said.

Nearly 14 percent of eligible voters in the county have already voted. The board has already received back around 120,000 of the 147,000 absentee ballots they mailed out.

Given this is the first election in several years where voters had to request the application, Platten is happy with the participation and expects the number of early votes to be a significant part of the total at the end of the night.
