Rev. Jesse Jackson will celebrate 70 years of life, family, victories, losses and his unyielding desire to serve his local community, state, nation and world through all circumstances, at this year’s Rainbow PUSH Citizenship Education Fund awards dinner this Friday, November 11, 6pm at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.

“We’ve come full circle from where Dr. King left us.  Dr. King’s last movement was about the ‘Poor People’s Campaign;’ we occupied the mall in Washington and we called it ‘Resurrection City.’ Today, they’re occupying Wall Street and really, the agenda is the same: economic justice; we’re free but not equal.  Too few people have too much concentrated wealth made possible by government gifts and breaks.  Too many people have too little and are neglected by government policy”, Rev Jackson stated.

The night is set to create an atmosphere of remembering our past, celebrating the spirit of service and most importantly focusing on a very critical and neglected issue in our urban communities, education. Proceeds from the dinner will go to PUSH for Excellence. Over the past seven years Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. and PUSH for Excellence have awarded $3,115,251.00 in scholarships.

Since 1975, PUSH for Excellence has sought to encourage students and their parents to strive toward academic excellence, and to make education and the development of America’s youth a shared community function. Annually, PUSH-Excel expands educational opportunities to youth across the nation by providing academic scholarships, testing and college preparation, oratorical competitions, and juvenile mentoring and early intervention programs.

This year’s honorees include Hill Harper – CSI New York, Jenifer Lewis – Aunt from Fresh Prince, Soul Food and The Brothers, Al Davis – Oakland Raiders Owner (Posthumously), Harry Johnson – CEO MLK Memorial Foundation, Tommie Smith — Gold Medalist at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and Skip Mason President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. R&B crooner Howard Hewitt will provide entertainment.

The event will take place Friday November 11, 2011 at 6p.m. at The Beverly Hilton Hotel  – 9876 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills, CA. Red Carpet starts at 5:30p.m.
