Dominion East Ohio Gas Co. did not shut off gas outside the home that exploded Monday on Cleveland’s West Side because the worker couldn’t get to the underground valve. And that satisfied the company’s policy.
“Although not required by the company’s standard operating procedure, since he was already at the site, he took the additional step of attempting to shut off service at the curb,” Dominion spokesman Neil Durbin said in a written statement Wednesday. “During his attempt, he discovered that the valve was buried at a deeper than usual level.”
