The present structure, finished in 1975, is an imposing brick fortress, with a three-story atrium and a spacious gym rebuilt after the roof collapsed 10 years ago. But the school is at best a third full most days, leaving the halls eerily quiet.

Five years ago, there were about 1,000 students; now East has just 645, a third of them in special education. Teachers say the school is safe, but that the surrounding area gives East an undeserved reputation for violence.
