Jerry Tomko, now 68 and retired in San Diego, said the name Cavaliers appealed to him because it signified fearless men who never surrender.
Tomko’s entry was among more than 11,000 in a contest Cavaliers founder Nick Mileti orchestrated with The Plain Dealer newspaper in February 1970
