Kilpatrick was led from the courtroom in handcuffs.

Kilpatrick will make his way to the Charles Egeler Reception & Guidance Center in Blackman Township as early as this afternoon, said Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan.

The timing is up to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, which typically brings in prisoners on Fridays.

The facility is where incoming prisoners are sorted through to determine their placement within the corrections system.

It sits on 53 acres and is protected by a double chain link fence, electronic monitoring systems and razor-ribbon wire, according to the department.

Marlan said that all new intakes are put in single cells and are isolated as the department learns more about them.

With Kilpatrick, that isolation will likely continue for some time.

“We’ll keep him in protective custody so that he doesn’t mix with the general population for a while,” Marlan said.

That is for the safety of Kilpatrick, other inmates and the corrections officers, he said. The same treatment was given to Dr. Jack Kevorkian and other high-profile inmates.

While Kilpatrick is at the Egeler facility, for the next two to four weeks, he will undergo a health-care and psychological assessment and the department will determine his custody level. At that point it will be determined at which correctional facility Kilpatrick will be sent to serve his sentence.
