Established in 1914, the Cleveland Foundation is the world’s first community foundation. In 2009, it gave out $82 million in local grants for education, neighborhood revitalization, economic development, youth and human services and the arts.

Board Chairman David Goldberg said that after a difficult 2009, the foundation is in steadier financial waters. Its assets stand at $1.8 billion, and are surging back after dropping to $1.6 billion in 2008, he said.

Nationally, grant dollars given out by community foundations fell by an average of 10 percent in 2009, but the Cleveland Foundation’s grants dropped by less than 6 percent, he said
