Breakthrough Schools is now an umbrella for four independent Cleveland charters: Citizens’ Academy, Entrepreneurship Preparatory School, Village Preparatory School and The Intergenerational School.

Citizens’, for kindergarten through fifth grade, wants to add a middle school in 2011. The founder of “E Prep” middle school and Village Preparatory elementary plans to open another middle school. Intergenerational would add a second school for kindergarten through eighth grade.

The existing schools, which will have a combined enrollment of more than 1,000 students in the fall, are seeking closer ties with the Cleveland school district.

Cleveland school officials have indicated interest in letting charters use buildings. The district has signed preliminary agreements to be the new schools’ state-required sponsor, but that doesn’t guarantee access to buildings.

Obtaining use of city schools is key to the charters’ plans, said Alan Rosskamm, Breakthrough’s chief executive officer. Ohio’s privately managed, publicly funded charters receive no local tax money for facilities.
