Cleveland school officials have balanced the budget at hand with employee concessions and school closings. But more trouble is just ahead, prompting the district to consider asking for its first new operating levy since 1996.

The school board, which met Thursday to ratify a new teachers contract, has tentatively scheduled another meeting Monday, three days before a November ballot filing deadline.

The district has been conducting a poll to gauge public support for increasing property taxes but has not decided whether to proceed, spokesman John Hairston said. The last time the schools asked for an operating levy was in 2005, when the issue received only about a third of the votes cast.
