In 1920, women received the right to vote. But it wasn’t until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, that African Americans began to triumph over the opposition that had prevented our people from exercising our constiutional right based on the 15th and 19th amendment.

The history of women and blacks in this country is one filled with struggle, discrimination, and seemingly impossible odds. Yet, here we are in 2010 seeing women of color and faith doing some pretty impressive things.

Though controversial at times, it is undeniable that these women have broken through into the mainstream—something many women who preceded them were unable to do.
