Three African-Americans– a marvelous poet, a giant of the civil rights movement and one of the best basketball players ever– were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. The award is the nation’s highest civillian honor.
Maya Angelou, Bill Russell and Congressman John Lewis join 12 other recipients of the award this year, including former President George H.W. Bush, investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett and union leader John J. Sweeny.
