The Cleveland Metropolitan School District held a news conference Sunday to announce the retirement of its Chief Executive Officer.

Sanders told reporters he plans to spend time reflecting on his three decades of service in education.

“I have decided that now is the time for me to pause, take a moment of relection, and determine what I really want to do when I grow up,”  Sanders said, in a news conference Sunday morning. “I want to spend some time with my family and friends. I want to travel a little. I want to begin working on my second book”.

“I would also like to go back to my love of teaching Sunday school,” Sanders continued.

Next month, Sanders plans to start work as a substitute teacher at his church in Sandusky, Ohio.

Dr. Eugene Sanders has been CEO of CMSD since 2006. He informed Mayor Frank Jackson and the School Board over the weekend that he will retire, effective as soon as Feb. 2, 2011.
