Power companies throughout Ohio have been working to restore service to about 100,000 customers left in the dark by thunderstorms and strong winds that pummeled the state.

Duke Energy reported about three-fourths of those outages in Cincinnati and parts of southwestern Ohio on Monday night. Thousands of homes and businesses in the Cleveland, Dayton and Springfield areas also were without power.

The National Weather Service says residents in dozens of counties reported damage from winds that snapped tree limbs and downed power lines. It was investigating several unconfirmed reports of funnel clouds.

The Dayton Daily News reported part of the facade of a restaurant was ripped off, apparently by straight-line winds.
