Slavery was formally abolished in the United States on June 19, 1865. This  date is the largest known celebration of the emancipation of African Americans in the United States. It  is marked yearly on the third Sunday of June.

“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.”

With these lines slaves In the last hold out state of Texas were freed according to General Gordon Granger  in the form of General Order Number 3. Gordon delivered these lines personally to all posts that still maintained slaves.
