Storms slammed northeast Ohio late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, bringing high winds and heavy rains, which caused flash flooding and the loss of power in some areas.

More than 40,000 residents in Cuyahoga County and between 5,000-10,000 in Summit County were without power Tuesday morning, according to FirstEnergy. By 9 a.m., power had been restored to about 20,000 residents.

The hardest hit areas are Lakewood and Cleveland, which both had more than 10,000 residents without power. The cause of the outage was that a substation in Brooklyn flooded according to FirstEnergy spokesman Mark Durbin.

Crews have diverted the energy flow to some of the other substations in the area, but FirstEnergy is asking west side residents to conserve energy so the substations can handle the increased energy flow. Durbin said the company is asking residents not to do laundry or turn the air conditioning up too high.

Crews are unsure when power will be restored.Residents across northeast Ohio have dealt with significant outages over the last 24 hours, as extreme heat caused outages to about 55,000 people on Monday, according to FirstEngery.
