Weeks ago, a storm came through my area and it shook me for a moment. The wind was so heavy and the rain so hard with bursts of thunder that would terrify the bravest of people.

I lay in my bed almost expecting the roof to fly off, or a tree from the woods behind me to come thru my window. That’s how crazy this storm felt. It went from light rain to winds capable of turning into a tornado very quickly. The anxiety that took over my body and mind was unexplainable.

However, when the kids screamed out in fear, I momentarily let my own fear go because calming them down was my priority. I knew all the right words to comfort them as I rubbed their backs to ease them back to sleep.

“No worries baby, it’s just a little wind, rain and thunder. “

“Nothing to be afraid about, it won’t hurt you.”

“Everything is going to be okay; God’s protection is all around us.”

“Just close your eyes and rest, and before you know it this storm will pass.”

It worked! They went right back to sleep…but I was a nervous wreck! I didn’t believe a word I had said. Not one.

I was frantic wondering if we needed to take shelter in the basement. Or maybe I should at least bring the babies to my bed so we will be together. Oh my goodness, was that my deck furniture flying over my house?

But then I heard a small still voice that began to comfort me much like I had comforted my kids.

Tanya, I am with you now and always. There is no storm you can’t overcome…. physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. I got you. Rest and have faith that this storm too shall pass.

Slowly I felt the anxiety and fear begin to leave me. Instead of being afraid of the raging winds and rain, I allowed it to rock me to sleep …

And guess what? I know for a fact that the “storm” in reference was not just the one literally going on outside my window. But those words were also for the “storms” brewing in my personal life.

You too can find comfort in the fact that no matter what seems to be shaking your foundation right now, God is not shocked by anything going on in our lives. Here’s the kicker: things may not unfold the way we expect or desire them to, but just like those people who did experience damage to their homes and property during that storm, no matter the end result, God is still (and will always be) in control.
