The second suspect in last week’s shooting death of 11-year-old Carmella Holley was in custody Monday afternoon at the Summit County Jail.
Vernon D. Singleton, 25, of Akron, was identified by Akron police detectives as the second suspect immediately after the shooting.
There had been a warrant out for his arrest on a charge of murder.
Akron police Lt. Melissa Schnee said there was an incident when family members were bringing Singleton to detective bureau headquarters, on the sixth floor of the Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center in downtown Akron.
“Apparently there was some type of disagreement between family members as he turned himself in,” Schnee said.
She said she had no details.
Attorney Jonathan Sinn, who said he was hired to represent Singleton by his family on Friday afternoon, described the trouble as more than a mere disagreement.
Sinn said there was an altercation outside police headquarters over the $5,000 reward offered by authorities when Singleton was at large over the weekend.
Singleton’s father, Lanon Carter, a minister from Canton, arrived with Singleton at police headquarters in one car shortly before noon Monday, Sinn said.
Family members who were following them in another vehicle tried to cut them off before they arrived, Sinn said.
An argument and a fight ensued, and at some point, Sinn said, Singleton jumped out of his car as officers were arriving outside, threw himself on the ground and surrendered without resistance.
Days before Monday afternoon’s incident, Sinn said he had been in touch with detectives and had informed them that he would bring Singleton in peacefully.
“I was going to walk him in Monday morning,” Sinn said.
The situation had calmed down considerably by 12:30 p.m. Monday.
