Police in Philadelphia will enforce a strict curfew on minors after mobs of violent young people attacked strangers in several instances.

Mayor Michael Nutter unveiled the city’s plan Monday, saying that children under 13 must be home by 10 p.m. and teens between 13 and 18 by midnight.

An even stricter curfew will go into effect on Fridays and Saturdays in several areas, such as Center City, CNN affiliate WPVI reported. Curfew there begins at 9 p.m. on those nights for youths under 18, Nutter said.

First-time curfew breakers will be fined $150. Repeat offenders could be slapped with fines up to $500, the mayor’s office said.

“I want to strongly encourage parents and guardians to be vigilant and to look out for their children this weekend,” Nutter said Monday. “There is no excuse for young people to be able to participate in coordinated, violent behavior if parents are doing their job. It is your responsibility, not the government’s, to watch your kids.”

The announcement follows a spate of violent attacks in Center City, a business and club district in downtown Philadelphia.

In the most recent incident, a gang of 20 to 40 minors ambushed two people, WPVI reported. The two victims were chosen at random by the mob, that included an 11-year-old boy.

So far, police have arrested four people in connection with the attack .
